Welcome to Trezor
Congratulations on purchasing your new Trezor hardware wallet! Whether you're new to crypto or a seasoned investor, securing your digital assets is one of the most important steps you can take. The Trezor hardware wallet offers a powerful, easy-to-use interface that gives you complete control over your cryptocurrencies while keeping your private keys safe from threats.
This guide will walk you through the full setup process using the official Trezor onboarding site: Trezor.io/Start. You’ll learn how to safely initialize your device, create a recovery seed, install firmware, and begin using your wallet securely.
Go to Trezor.io/Start →Step 1: Unboxing Your Trezor
When you first receive your Trezor device, make sure the packaging is sealed and untampered. Inside the box, you should find:
- Your Trezor hardware wallet (Model One or Model T)
- USB cable
- Recovery seed cards
- User manual & stickers
Do not use the device if the holographic seal is broken or if you suspect the package has been tampered with. If everything looks good, you’re ready to move forward.
Step 2: Connect to Trezor.io/Start
Using your computer or mobile device, open your browser and go to https://trezor.io/start. This is the official site for downloading firmware and setting up your wallet securely. Avoid third-party websites or unofficial tools.
Once on the page, select your device model (Trezor Model T or Trezor Model One). You’ll be prompted to connect your wallet via USB cable.
Step 3: Install Trezor Suite
Trezor Suite is the official desktop application for managing your device and crypto assets. While you can use the browser version, the desktop app is more secure and feature-rich.
Download Trezor Suite for your operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux):
Download Trezor SuiteAfter installing, open the Suite and connect your Trezor device. The app will guide you through the firmware installation (if it’s not already installed).
Step 4: Install or Update Firmware
Most Trezor devices ship without firmware to prevent tampering. When you connect your device, Trezor Suite will prompt you to install the latest firmware. This ensures your device has the most up-to-date security patches.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. Do not disconnect your device during this process. Once the firmware is installed, your device will restart and be ready for initialization.
Step 5: Create a New Wallet
After firmware installation, you’ll be prompted to either create a new wallet or recover an existing one. Choose Create a new wallet if this is your first time setting up Trezor.
You’ll then be given a 12- or 24-word recovery seed. This is your backup — write it down and store it offline in a safe location. Never share this seed with anyone. If someone gains access to it, they can steal your funds.
Use the included recovery seed card to write your seed down. Trezor will ask you to confirm some of the words to ensure you’ve written it correctly.
Step 6: Set PIN and Optional Passphrase
To further secure your wallet, you’ll be asked to set a PIN code. This PIN is required every time you connect your Trezor. Choose a PIN that is hard to guess but easy for you to remember.
For advanced users, you can also enable a passphrase — an optional word or sentence that acts as an extra layer of encryption on top of your recovery seed. Each unique passphrase creates a different wallet.
Step 7: Add Your Crypto Accounts
Once your wallet is initialized, you can start adding accounts for different cryptocurrencies. Trezor Suite supports:
- Bitcoin
- Ethereum and ERC-20 tokens
- Litecoin
- Cardano, Polkadot, and more
You can label accounts, manage multiple wallets, and view transaction history all from the Trezor Suite interface.
Step 8: Receive and Send Funds
To receive crypto, navigate to your account in Trezor Suite and click “Receive.” Copy the generated address and share it with the sender. You can verify the address on your Trezor device screen to ensure its authenticity.
To send funds, click “Send,” enter the recipient’s address, amount, and confirm the transaction on your Trezor screen. Always double-check addresses before confirming.
Step 9: Backup & Recovery Tips
Your recovery seed is your only backup. Trezor cannot recover it for you. Some essential tips:
- Store your seed in a fireproof, waterproof place
- Never store your seed online or in cloud storage
- Consider using a metal seed backup device for added durability
- Practice a recovery test in a safe environment
